Morley is a market town within the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough in West Yorkshire. It is located around 5 miles away from Leeds city centre.
Morley has a fascinating industrial heritage. During the Industrial Revolution of the19th century, its inhabitants were involved in quarrying and coal mining, but it was probably most famous for the manufacture of woollen textiles. In particular it recycled old woollen cloth into a fabric known as "shoddy" which was used to make military uniforms.
The Bagshaw Museum at nearby Batley is housed in a magnificent mansion which was formerly the home of shoddy magnate George Sheard. It has many exhibits of local interest together with international collections including an Egyptology display.
More famous today and very sadly missed is the comedian Ernie Wise, who was born in Morley in November1925 and passed away at the Nuffield Hospital in Leeds in March 1999. There is a statue of him in Morley’s characterful Queen Street.
As well as close access to the Leeds city centre, Morley is nearby to Middleton Park. Known as the green jewel of South Leeds, this 190 hectare green space contains something for everyone with attractions including a café, bowling greens, a playground, fishing lake and community events held throughout the year.
The town possesses strong transport links, with the train station running to and from Leeds seven days a week. There are also buses going to Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and other West Yorkshire towns.
When visiting Wakefield, the National Coalmining Museum offers fascinating insights into the coal miner’s life. Former miners escort groups down the shaft to the coal face and pit ponies can be seen at the above-ground displays.
