Whether you are single and have not parented your own children, or a single parent who looks after your own family, or whose children have left home, you can still become a foster parent.
Before you take on the journey of fostering a child or young adult, there a few things to consider:
- Make sure you will not be overstretching yourself if you do decide to foster a child. Fostering is incredibly rewarding in so many ways, but with these moments come challenges, which can be difficult alone. We offer constant support and guidance throughout this, however it is something worth considering.
- If you already have a child, you should consider discussing this with them. There are advantages to fostering children of similar ages to your own, and it can enhance the family dynamic, however open discussions are important in these circumstances.
- Consider the age range of the child you would like to foster when deciding on being a single foster parent. There are benefits to both young children, and young adults, all of which can be discussed.
We welcome single people to Fostering2Inspire and we would be happy to discuss the prospect of you becoming a foster carer with us. We understand that being a single person who has not had the opportunity to parent, does not mean you do not have something to offer as a foster carer. You may have always harboured an aspiration to parent, or you may wish to transfer the time and skills you utilise in your work into your home life. By fostering, you are able to offer a vulnerable child or young person a safe, caring environment. For a short time or a longer spell in your role of being a single foster parent, you can accompany each other on life’s journey, making memories, sharing successes and toughening out the difficult times together.
As a single parent you will already be well placed to offer another child or young person a home so long as you have a spare bedroom. You already understand the time, energy and compassion required to support a child or young person. We would love for you to use your skills and experiences in caring for fostered children and young people.
When you become a foster parent, Fostering2Inspire will be on hand to support you every step of the way. From the moment you make an enquiry we will be able to offer support and advice to ensure your fostering journey is a smooth and enjoyable one.
