Huddersfield has a rich and fascinating history and one of its claims to fame came about in 1895, at The George Hotel, when 21 Lancashire and Yorkshire Clubs voted to set up their own Northern Rugby Football Union – the Rugby League. This is a game enjoyed by all the family and you can watch the impressive Huddersfield Giants play regular fixtures at the John Smith’s Stadium, which is also home to Huddersfield Town Football Club.

Castle Hill is close to Huddersfield and a great place to get some spectacular views of the surrounding area. The hill is a scheduled ancient monument and the grade II listed Victoria Tower, on the summit which is nearly 1,000 feet high, is the town’s most conspicuous landmark. The hilltop has been settled for at least 4,000 years and includes the remains of late-Bronze Age and Iron Age hillforts, a 12th-century motte and bailey castle and the site of a deserted medieval village.
One delightful way to see the countryside with your family is via the Kirklees Light Railway, where you can climb aboard for a seven mile return trip through the glorious South Pennine Foothills. There are also outdoor adventure play areas, a café, a miniature railway and terrific special events which are run throughout the year.
